Emergency crews responded around 12:45 p.m. and transported both children to nearby hospitals by helicopter. More than 50 students from a Chicago school were visiting the park at the time. Officials continue to investigate the incident, and no further details about the boys' conditions have been released.

An adult chaperone immediately began performing CPR on the unconscious boy while waiting for emergency crews to arrive, according to Shaw Local. First responders reached the scene about 15 minutes after the initial dispatch call.

By the time rescuers arrived, both boys were conscious and alert. However, officials said they were showing signs of shock and distress and were airlifted to a nearby children's hospital as a precaution. Authorities noted that the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The first boy was transported by helicopter at approximately 2:01 p.m., while the second was flown out about 20 minutes later to ensure there were no complications related to the incident.

Officials also reminded visitors that swimming is prohibited at Matthiessen State Park and that leaving designated trails is against park regulations. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources advises guests to remain on marked and paved pathways, which are identified by posts, tree markers, and maps throughout the park. The agency emphasized the importance of following safety rules while visiting the natural area.
